On the 6 th September 2019, the Materials Chemistry Research Center and the Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University hosted the first Thailand International Symposium on Green Chemistry, Sustainable Materials and Fuels.

This event brought together over 150 students, researchers, teachers and academics to discuss the important topic of green chemistry and sustainable engineering. A total of 43 posters were presented at the event, with the poster prizes being sponsored by Wiley publishing, which generously gifted 3 books for the top three winners.

A total of 8 invited research talks were presented by world class academics from Thailand and abroad. Invited talks included presentations from Professor Francesca Kerton (the 2019 winner of the Canadian Chemical Society Green Chemistry Prize) and Professor Chris Kozak from Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada. They covered a diverse range of topics including waste valorisation, catalysis and bio-based polymers to name but a few!

Dr Duncan Macquarrie from the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence, the University of York (UK), presented an exciting talk on the development of mesoporous carbons from biomass for Li battery applications. This presentation also highlighted the challenges in commercialisation and moving a process from the lab scale to production. Dr Macquarrie shared his thoughts on the event: “I thoroughly enjoyed Thailand International Symposium on Green Chemistry, Sustainable Materials and Fuels today - it was an exciting and very stimulating day, with excellent speakers both from Thailand and abroad. I also thoroughly enjoyed several lively discussions about the work of the many excellent poster presenters.”

This event highlighted the importance of green chemistry and sustainable materials for meeting the goals of Thailand 4.0 and developing a sustainable circular bio-economy.
